About Dr Jason Spears
Physician | Premed Coach | AuthorÂ
Are you ready to go from a diamond in the rough premed to a must-admit medical school applicant? If so, you're in the right place.Â
I know what it feels like to struggle with self-doubt, to want to make your parents proud, and to search for a "guaranteed" way to get into medical school. Not long ago, I was in your exact position -- dreaming of becoming a doctor but facing major hurdles along the way.Â
My Journey: From Premed to PhysicianÂ
When I started at Northwestern University, I was dead set on becoming a doctor. But let me tell you—freshman chemistry was brutal. Even with tutors, problem sets, and office hours, I barely made it through.
But quitting was never an option.
I wasn’t premed just for myself; I was doing it for my grandma, who suffered a brain aneurysm when I was eight, and for my paternal grandma, who had a stroke. Plus, I couldn’t imagine telling my mentor, Dr. Smith (an anesthesiologist who gave me my first shadowing opportunity in 7th grade), that I didn’t have what it took.
Like many of you, I believed medical school admissions came down to MCAT scores and GPA. But even after doing everything right, I received rejection after rejection—until I discovered a shocking truth.
AMCAS had made a clerical error on my application.Â
They reported zero credit hours for most of my premed courses, making it look like I didn’t meet the requirements. As a result, every medical school rejected me. This error, though rare, delayed my path to becoming a doctor.
But it also fueled my passion for helping premed students avoid mistakes and secure their medical school acceptance.
