UC Davis Post-Bac Getting You Where You Need to Be

The UC Davis School of Medicine offers a one-year comprehensive post baccalaureate program to assist educationally and/or socio-economically applicants gain admission to medical school.

The ultimate goal is to produce physicians who practice in underserved areas.

Program Focus

This program focuses on first-time and reapplicants to medical school who need to improve their academic profiles in-order to be competitive candidates for admission to medical school.

Structure

The UC Davis program begins in mid-June and ends in June of the following year, a 12-month program. The first component of the post-bac program is an intense ten-week MCAT review course and instruction in learning skills. Upon completion of the summer portion you are advised to take the August MCAT.

Based on the idea that teaching makes individuals more active learners, there is a focus on classroom presentations. Over the summer you will also participate in weekly seminars addressing health care issues, to improve awareness of medical concerns and improve upon your interviewing skills.

During the fall, winter and spring quarter you will enroll in upper-division science coursework at UC Davis in-order to strengthen your academic profile.

Emphasis will be placed on addressing your academic weaknesses, while demonstrating success in a challenging academic environment. You will select appropriate courses in consultation with program advisors and it is expected that you will maintain a GPA of 3.5 or better.

Throughout the academic year you will continue to attend seminars on health care issues.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must be resident of California and be considered economically or educationally disadvantaged. Also you need to show you have potential for a medical career and this means having at least a 2.7 GPA and a minimum MCAT score of 18.

Admissions

Applications will be considered beginning the second week of January and admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis. To apply you will need to complete the California Post Baccalaureate Consortium application and submit supporting materials which include:
  • letters of recommendation
  • college transcripts
  • AMCAS application (if reapplicant)

Once your application is complete it will take four to six weeks for processing, at this time you will be notified if you have been invited for an interview via phone or email.

Deadline

May 18 is the deadline by which all materials must be received.
