Michigan State University ABLE Program

Michigan State University offers the Advanced Baccalaureate Learning Experience (ABLE) Program to disadvantaged students who need additional preparation before entering medical school.

This program allows you to apply directly to Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine and if the admissions committee believes you will benefit from the ABLE Program you will be referred to their selection committee.

Students who participate in the program have an opportunity to refine their knowledge in the sciences and upon successful completion of the program matriculate to medical school the following fall (no lag year).

Program Focus

The ABLE program is for disadvantaged students who show a promise in medicine, but are lacking the science background to perform at a level expected of medical students. Since Michigan State is a public institution admission preference is given to Michigan residents.

Structure

The program is one year in length (fall and spring semester). If you successfully complete the minimum requirements of the ABLE Program you will be offered regular admission to the entering class of the College of Human Medicine i.e. complete the program in the spring and matriculate to medical school in the fall.

The ABLE Post Baccalaureate experience builds upon your basic knowledge in the sciences by having you take upper-division (300-400 level) undergraduate science courses and medical courses. There is a considerable amount of academic support and ABLE student activities to promote academic success and enhance successful learning strategies.

Eligibility

You should meet the minimum requirements of an applicant applying to the College of Human Medicine. This program does cater to students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Admissions

There is no separate application for the ABLE Program, you will apply directly to MSU's College of Human Medicine and if the admissions committee believes you can benefit from additional science preparation you will be referred to the ABLE Selection Committee. This committee will make the final selection on students who will be admitted to the program.
