Goucher College Post-Bac Unveils How to Get Into Med School

The Goucher College Premed Post-bac Program in Baltimore, MD is for individuals who have not completed their basic premed requirements.

The Goucher program has been in existence for over 20 years and over the past eight years 100% of graduates have been accepted into U.S. medical schools.

A compelling aspect of the program is your classes are separate from the undergraduate student body, allowing for small class instruction, you will know your professors, and have access to a number of academic and advising resources.

Program Focus

This program is designed primarily for career-changers or those who have not taken the science courses required by medical schools. If you have taken one or two of the basic sciences and/or it has been five years since doing so, you may benefit from Goucher College's Premed Post-Bac Program.

Structure

The program is designed to allow you to complete all the premed requirements in twelve months. You will be taking a full-time load of courses, preventing you from working during the Goucher College program. Classes begin in the summer term and run through the fall and spring semesters of the regular academic year and then you're done.

Summer Term

  • Math Review
  • Principles of Chemistry (2 semesters)

Fall Term

  • Biology with lab
  • Organic Chemistry with lab
  • Physics with lab
  • Hospital or research experience
  • MCAT preparation

Spring Term

  • Biology with lab
  • Organic Chemistry with lab
  • Physics with lab
  • MCAT preparation

The program will conclude in May and it is expected that participants will have taken the MCAT at this time and prepare to submit their applications to medical school during the months of June and July.

Eligibility

The Goucher program is for individuals who have a bachelor's degree, but who lack the science requirements necessary for medical school. Additionally, if you have taken one or two of the courses required for medical school you cannot repeat them at Goucher, instead you will take an upper-division science course(s).

Admissions

Applicants to Goucher will be evaluated on their previous academic experience along with standardized test scores (SAT, ACT or GRE). You should show that you can successfully complete the program and have a motivation to become a physician.

Competitive applicants will be invited for an interview after all of their application materials have been received.

To gain a sense of the competitiveness of the program, please realize only 25-30 students are enrolled each year.

Deadlines

Admissions is made on a rolling basis and candidates can begin applying to the program beginning in the Fall and there is no deadline.

It should be noted classes begin in June and the financial aid deadline is February 15.
